About

Dr. Sarkar is an interdisciplinary researcher with more than a decade of expertise in immunology, microbiology, genomics, and bioinformatics, specializing in host–pathogen interactions and infectious disease biology. He holds a Ph.D. in immunology from Chiba University, Japan, and complements this foundational training with extensive applied research in molecular diagnostics, viral genomics, transcriptomics, and microbiome analysis conducted in Bangladesh.

Throughout his career, Dr. Sarkar has held key positions at the Bangladesh Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (BCSIR), most recently serving as a Senior Scientific Officer. In this capacity, he led and contributed to diverse research initiatives spanning viral diagnostics, genomics, immunopathogenesis, and microbiome studies—overseeing project leadership, laboratory supervision, next-generation sequencing-based analyses, data interpretation, manuscript preparation, and scientific reporting. Earlier, as a Scientific Officer at BCSIR, he investigated antimicrobial resistance and bacterial genomics. Dr. Sarkar began his research career at icddr,b as a Research Officer, where he applied clinical and molecular approaches to study immune mechanisms underlying Guillain–Barré Syndrome.

Research Interests

Dr. Sarkar’s research interests lie at the intersection of immunology, genomics, and infectious disease biology, with a strong translational focus on improving public health outcomes in resource-limited settings. He is particularly fascinated by the mechanistic underpinnings of host–pathogen interactions—ranging from T-cell regulation (Th1/Th2 balance, IFNγ signaling) to the immunopathogenesis of emerging viral infections such as dengue and COVID-19.

His interests extend deeply into genomic epidemiology, where he utilizes whole-genome sequencing and RNA-Seq to track viral evolution, identify key genetic pathways in disease progression, and uncover novel biomarkers. He is equally committed to applied molecular diagnostics, striving to develop affordable, locally produced detection tools that enhance diagnostic accuracy in endemic regions. More recently, his work has expanded into environmental microbiome research, exploring soil microbial diversity as a resource for understanding ecosystem health and its potential links to human disease. Across all these domains, Dr. Sarkar is driven by a commitment to bridging basic mechanistic research with field-deployable solutions for infectious disease control and surveillance.
