Ms. Zara Jabeen Mahbub

I still remember orientation day when Mr. Moslehuddin addressed us as the future of Bangladesh - future of the world. At that point I was not thinking about Bangladesh or the world, all I could think of was how fast I would finish classes for the day and rush back to the office. I was working full time and studying part time as my father had just suffered a heart attack and I had the responsibility to take care of the family-owned buying house while he recovered. My journey at NSU began as a transfer student from Assumption University (ABAC). I had almost completed my coursework at ABAC when I began afresh in a completely new setting with different challenges ahead of me. I needed an institution that would understand my situation and NSU did just that. While I could transfer only 63 credits out of the 97 that I had completed already, I took this up as a new challenge. I decided to make all my teachers and stakeholders at the university aware of my situation. I made them my coaches in my quest to completion. Each and every one of them empathized and supported me. There were instances when I had to skip classes as buyers were visiting from abroad and my teachers understood and allowed me to take make-up classes and sometimes even exams. I had amazing friends who partnered with me and we forged forward with strength. I was a part of the ‘curve breaker trio’ – we annihilated averages scores and set new standards. We stayed up all night and made presentations and practiced speeches. We created new benchmarks wherever we went. 25 years after graduation, I look back at NSU being a strong pillar and foundation for me from where I learned to rebuild myself. My heart skips a beat every day as I pass Star and SPZ Towers to get to work right adjacent to the old campus. Life has somehow made me circle back to the same location. I smile with a sense of gratitude and fulfillment when I interview NSU candidates who graduate from the beautiful new campus. We share notes about the North South we have experienced and one thing still remains strong... North South’s focus on education, values and strength. Proud to be an NSUer for life!
