The journey of the Department of Media, Communication, and Journalism (MCJ) at North South University over the past three and a half years reflects a remarkable institutional transformation. Established in August 2022 with an inaugural cohort of just 18 students, the program has rapidly evolved into a full-fledged academic department with a vibrant community of more than 500 students across ten batches.
This remarkable growth has been accompanied by strong academic leadership and increasing scholarly recognition. MCJ has cultivated distinctive strengths in research, journalism, filmmaking, strategic communication, media policy, and global academic engagement. Initiatives such as the Media Leadership Talk Series have connected students with leading editors, senior media executives, and communication professionals, creating valuable opportunities for dialogue between academia and industry.
Strategic collaborations with leading media organizations, including Prothom Alo and Channel i, alongside partnerships with international institutions such as UNESCO, the Google News Initiative, and DW Akademie, have further strengthened the department's national and global engagement. The accomplishments of MCJ students in journalism, filmmaking, acting, international workshops, sports, and professional placements demonstrate the department's strong commitment to practice-based education and experiential learning.
Looking ahead, MCJ is well-positioned to establish itself as a regional leader in media, communication, and journalism education. Guided by North South University's vision of academic excellence, innovation, and societal impact, the department aims to modernize its curriculum with greater emphasis on artificial intelligence, digital media, and emerging communication technologies; strengthen industry-aligned education and research; expand international academic collaborations; and institutionalize flagship initiatives such as the biannual Bangladesh Media Summit.
Supported by its dedicated television studio, radio studio, and digital media laboratories, MCJ is poised to play an increasingly prominent role in advancing media education, research, and public engagement in Bangladesh and beyond.
