Dr. Adiya holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Kansas, specializing in applied microeconomics with research concentrations in Environmental Economics, Public Finance, and Education Policy. She also earned her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Economics from the prestigious University College London (UCL), undertaking research in Development Economics.
Before joining NSU as an Assistant Professor, Dr. Adiya served as a Senior Economist at the Ministry of Education and Child Care, Government of British Columbia, Canada. In this role, she led several high-impact policy research initiatives focused on student well-being, early learning, and education equity. Her work involved designing and analyzing large-scale datasets, such as the BC K–12 Student Learning Survey, and generating evidence-based insights on key government-funded programs like Child Care to inform policy decisions. She regularly presented findings and recommendations to senior leadership, including the Minister and Deputy Ministers of Education, and collaborated with school districts, Indigenous organizations, and inter-ministerial teams to support data-informed program development.
Her policy experience is further complemented by her role as a Doctoral Research Fellow at the Institute for Policy and Social Research (IPSR) at the University of Kansas, where she conducted empirical evaluations of state-level education policies—examining access to higher education, the effectiveness of tuition-free programs, and disparities in educational attainment across demographic groups.
Dr. Adiya has more than nine years of university teaching experience. She previously taught at NSU as a Lecturer for over four years and served as a Lead Instructor at the University of Kansas, USA, for five years. Her teaching approach emphasizes clarity, critical thinking, and real-world application, and she is committed to fostering inclusive and engaging learning environments. Her combined experience in research and public policy informs a well-rounded, interdisciplinary approach to both teaching and scholarly work.
