North South University’s (NSU) Department of Media, Communication and Journalism organised an online session of its MCJ Research Talk Series on 24 September 2026, examining how generative artificial intelligence is reshaping journalism. 
 
Dr. Xueqing (Ivory) Li, Associate Professor at the School of Media and Communication, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China, delivered the talk titled “How Generative AI Is Shaping Journalism: The Paradoxes of Efficiency, Professional Identity, and Productivity”. Dr. Soumik Pal, Assistant Professor of Media, Communication and Journalism, moderated the event.  
Professor Xueqing (Ivory) Li discussed how artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming modern newsrooms, tracing its evolution from computer-assisted reporting to generative AI and large language models. She highlighted AI’s potential to improve newsroom efficiency while noting challenges such as declining traffic to original news sources, local-language limitations, data control, and authenticity. She emphasised that journalists must verify AI-generated content, sources, and context, ensuring human judgment and editorial skills remain central to journalism. She said, “Progress should be judged by journalistic quality and public value, not only by speed and output.”
Dr. Md. Rizwanul Islam, Professor of Law and Dean, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, delivered the opening remarks. He highlighted the value of international academic exchanges and encouraged reflection on how AI is reshaping teaching, research, and professional practice.
Dr. Md. Harisur Rahman, Chair of the Department of Media, Communication and Journalism, thanked the speaker and emphasised the relevance of research-informed discussions for students preparing for careers in a changing media environment. The session concluded with expressions of interest in further academic exchanges and collaborative research on AI and journalism.
