Department of English and Modern Languages

Research Plan (2019-2023)

  • Every faculty member will have a minimum of 3 publications over a period of 5 years. The advisory committee will decide on the acceptability of the peer-reviewed journals.
  • Faculty members will be encouraged to pursue the highest degree in their respective fields.
  • UGC, World Bank, and TESOL related research grants will be explored. Scholarships and postdoctoral programs can also be explored.
  • Establishing a center for advanced studies in Language, Literature and TESOL by 2024. This center will promote research, publications, and national and international collaborations. The areas of focus for the center will be: Bangladeshi writing in English, Translations, Teaching of English to Speakers of Bangla (TESB), and establishing the Dhaka school of thought in linguistics and semiotics.

Dissemination

  • International conferences will be held in 2019 and 2022.
  • The department will continue to arrange monthly discourse series lectures, and Colloquia, reaching out to scholars from home and abroad.
  • MoU’s with international institutions will be explored, and collaboration with Stony Brook University, NY, Yunnan University China, and CIS will continue.
Department of Political Science and Sociology

Research Strategic Plan (2019-2023)

Group/Specialization: Political Science and Public Administration

  • (1) Research Area Identification or Specification of Research Area
  • With a goal to specialize in specific areas of Political Science and Public Administration, the group identified two key areas of research – (i) Electoral Governance and (ii) Governance - to focus in the immediate future. The factors behind determining two key areas were current experts/ resources within the department and contemporary global issues.
  • (i) Electoral Governance and Voting Behavior
  • Under this research theme, initial aim is to capture the upcoming elections in different countries of South Asia with a particular focus on the voting behavior of people.
  • (ii) Governance linking with SDGs
  • This broad theme will serve to capitalize the multidisciplinary resource pool within the department to observe the progress of different SDGs.
  • (2) Dissemination
  • Dept. of PSS will employ three types of dissemination: international conference, case studies as course materials and academic workshop on electoral governance.
  • (i) International Conference on ‘Rohingya issue(s)’
  • The department will organize an International Conference on Rohingya Issue in 2019 (most likely during Summer 2019) to host all national and international researchers working on Rohingya issue.
  • (ii) Prepare a Case Study book/ textbook for Public Administration and Political Science.
  • Realizing the scarcity of Bangladesh specific case studies, PSS aims to develop case studies for undergraduate courses on political science and public administration.
  • (iii) Arrange an academic workshop on ‘Electoral Governance’ after the next national election.
  • In 2019, PSS will arrange a national level workshop to reflect upon the elections in different countries of South Asia.

  • To establish an international level publishing unit from the department.

Mid-term Goals

  • (1) Within 03 years’ time at least two publications and preparation for an online journal registration with ISSN.
  • (2) In 3 years, a book structure/layout/first chapters’ draft [one Text Book on Sociology and one for Anthropology].
  • (3) International Collaboration (specific MoUs that can help the establishment of the research Centre/institute.
  • (4) In 3 years’ time at least 2 or 3 big research projects with international collaboration.
  • (5) At least two international conferences or seminar arrangement to attract the international community showing the ability to run the research Centre or for international accreditation about that.

Short-term Goals (1-year time)

  • (1) Research on how to apply for online journal registration, call for papers for first printed volume or an edited book.
  • (2) Forming a team of 3 persons for book and chapter planning for sociology and anthropology textbook in two separate groups. The team members would start drafting their outline for the chapters at the end of the first
  • (3) Self-motivated team formation among faculties for hunting collaborative research projects.
  • (4) Take the preparation for a first international conference on sociology and anthropology issues.
  • (5) Conducting two workshops/seminar on contemporary social and cultural burning issues.
  • (6) Designing flyers and adverts for sociology and anthropology courses. First designing for the professionalcourse could give a chance to enhance the steps in popularizing SOC and ANT.

Research promotion

To facilitate research activities of the department, DHP expects to establish a Centre for Bangladesh Studies by the mid of 2019. This centre will be hosted by the School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS) and DHP of NSU. The centre would promote research and publication activities of the core and adjunct faculty of DHP. The primary focus of the centre will be on the liberation war of Bangladesh.

Dissemination

DHP will engage in two types of outreach: International Conference and Seminar, and Monthly Colloquium regularly.

  • (1) International Conference and Seminar
  • The Department plans to organise one international Conference and one daylong seminar in the year 2020 and 2021. The department will organise a daylong seminar, titling ‘Bangabandhu and Bangladesh’ in March 2020. The department will host an international conference on ‘Liberation War and Global Response: Lessons to Learn’ in December 2021.
  • (2) Monthly Colloquium
  • The department will be regularly arranging Monthly Colloquium in the next five years. Scholars from various universities of home and abroad will present their papers in front if the NSU audience. The department frequently receives requests from the academics around the world who visit Bangladesh due to some other engagement and intend to present their papers on the relevant research areas of DHP under the monthly colloquium program.
Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology

Research Targets (2019-2023)

1. Faculty members with Ph.D. should make at least four (4) publications during the period 2019-2022 where:

  • At least two publications in SCOPUS indexed journals;
  • The total number of publications may be reduced if the faculty member publishes in high impact factor journals.
  • Faculty members may also write book chapters, credits for which would be considered according to NSU promotion policy.

2. Faculty members who do not have a Ph.D. degree should make at least three (3) publications of which at least one publication in SCOPUS indexed journals during 2019-2022

3. Faculty members are also encouraged to present in conference proceedings, write popular science articles in newspapers to increase visibility of the Department to the scientific communities and mass people.

  • (1) Faculty members with PhD should make at least three (3) publications during the period 2019-2022 where:
  • All journal publications should be in SCOPUS indexed journals with >1 impact factor;
  • At least one publication should be in SCOPUS indexed journals with >1.5 impact factor;
  • A publication in a SCOPUS indexed journals with >2 impact factor may be considered for reducing the total number of publications;
  • Faculty members may also write book chapters, credits for which would be considered according to NSU promotion policy.
  • (2) Faculty members with PhD may try to attract at least one (1) research project from external sources on behalf of the Department as the principal investigator, with assistance from non-PhD faculty members as co-investigators.
  • (3) Non-PhD faculty members should make at least two (2) publications during the 2019-2022 periods in SCOPUS indexed journals.
  • (4) Faculty members are also encouraged to write op-eds on environmental issues to increase visibility of the Department in public eye.
