Professor Dr. Hafizur Rahman did MSc in Biochemistry (1995) from the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. He did his MSc Thesis work at BIRDEM and later worked at BIRDEM Research Division as a Research Fellow, and Scientific Officer during 1997-2000. In the year 2000, he was awarded “Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho/MEXT) Scholarship” for the PhD program at Kumamoto University, Japan. During his PhD graduation, he was actively involved in basic research, and cloned several genes, expressed proteins, purified these proteins, and performed functional properties.
Prof. Dr. Hafiz is very familiar with Gene Cloning, Expression and Purification of Proteins, Isolation and Purification of DNA & RNA, PCR, Transformation, Gene sequencing and Gene manipulation, ELISA, Western blotting, Gel Electrophoresis, Histological and Immunohistochemical Techniques, etc. Dr. Hafiz is also very familiar with the development of pre-diabetes, diabetes, and diabetic complications models in rats.
Prof. Hafiz has 27 years of research, teaching, and leadership experience in the arena of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Diabetology, Clinical and Drug Research. Dr. Hafiz worked at BIRDEM (the Bangladesh Institute of Research and Rehabilitation in Diabetes, Endocrine and Metabolic Disorders) as a Research Fellow, Scientific Officer, and Postdoctoral Fellow, respectively. He has a long association with molecular medicine and drug research at Dr. Panjwani Center for Molecular Medicine and Drug Research (PCMD), International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS), University of Karachi, Pakistan. He served as a Visiting Professor, Assistant Professor, and Associate Professor at PCMD, ICCBS, University of Karachi, Pakistan as well as different academic Institutions at home and abroad. He has supervised 5 PhD, 9 MPhil, 4 BSc students at the University of Karachi, Pakistan.
He also won several research grants from international funding agencies as a Principal Investigator. Dr. Hafiz is passionate about research and teaching in the arena of biological sciences. He is working on a multi-county and multi-center research project focusing on insulin secretory defects among Asian diabetic subjects. Furthermore, he has initiated several research projects: i) Pathophysiology of type 2 diabetes in Asian subjects, ii) Exploring insulin secretory mechanisms of natural compounds in Pancreatic Islets, and iii) Development of an antioxidant-enriched blended tea for prevention and management of diabetes.
Dr. Hafiz has been awarded as a “COMSTECH Distinguished Scholar”. Taking advantage of this program, he can nominate 2-4 students for research work (6-12 months) and 1-2 faculty members for training (3 months) every year in OIC countries. Additionally, he can nominate 1-2 Technicians for a short training (6 weeks) in OIC/non-OIC countries. Recently, Dr. Hafizur Rahman has been nominated the “OIC-COMSTECH Focal Person for Bangladesh”. His role is to facilitate collaboration between Bangladesh and the OIC Standing Committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation (COMSTECH). He can play vital role in National Coordination (Acting as the primary liaison between COMSTECH and Bangladeshi government agencies, Universities, and Research Institutions), Scientific Collaboration & Networking (Encouraging joint research projects, exchange programs, and scholarships offered by COMSTECH), Research & Development Facilitation (Assisting researchers in grant applications and funding opportunities from COMSTECH and Islamic Development Bank), Human Resource Development (Encouraging Bangladeshi scientists, academics, and students to participate in COMSTECH fellowships, training, and skill development programs; Facilitating to organize seminars, workshops, and symposiums in Bangladesh under COMSTECH sponsorship).
