Biography & Ongoing Research

Biography

Dr. Salah Uddin’s research focuses on advanced materials, materials characterization, and modern manufacturing techniques, with a strong emphasis on 3D Printing (Additive Manufacturing) and Artificial Intelligence (AI/ ML). He combines expertise in materials design, performance, and computation to develop high-quality engineered materials for automobile, renewable energy, and consumer applications. His work promotes accessible and office-friendly 3D Printing technology, which enables students to engage in hands-on research and learn about the advancement of Industry 5.0 manufacturing practices.

Dr. Uddin earned his Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from Montana Technological University, USA, as part of a collaborative program of the Montana Materials Science Program at Montana State University, the University of Montana, and Montana Technological University. His doctoral work was fully funded by the U.S. Army Research Laboratory (Aberdeen Proving Ground - DEVCOM), focusing on high strain rate mechanical behavior in additively manufactured materials. He also received support from the National Science Foundation for research in atomic and molecular physics.

Following his Ph.D., he completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Southern Methodist University, Texas, funded by the Welch Foundation, where he developed techniques in Single Molecule Localization Lithography. At Miami University, he utilized gamma-ray spectroscopy to investigate material defects. He also applied advanced theoretical tools such as fractal analysis and time-resolved infrared thermography during his master's degree in materials science and engineering.

Dr. Uddin also brings industry experience, having worked as a materials engineer in ISO and A2LA-certified laboratories and manufacturing environments, analyzing both ferrous and non-ferrous materials using diverse testing and processing techniques. He spent a brief period in the casting industry in Dayton, Ohio. He then worked as a metallurgist at Ford and GM Manufacturing Suppliers in Michigan.

As an educator, Dr. Uddin is trained in evidence-based teaching and classroom management and has taught physics and engineering at Miami University and Montana Technological University. At North South University, he is teaching physics courses for a diverse group of students, mostly for engineering students, and he is committed to advancing intelligent and sustainable materials for engineering applications.

Dr. Uddin welcomes inquiries from motivated students interested in joining his research group.
