Curriculum Vitae

Tareq Mahbub is an Associate Professor at North South University. His academic background includes a PhD in management from the renowned Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Bangkok – a world leader in Global SDGs, energy and climate change and a pioneer in social entrepreneurship with innovation. He obtained his MBA in international business from Carleton University, Ottawa. 

He has been a Graduate Professor at the Melville School of Business, Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU), British Columbia, Canada – the only public polytechnic University in Canada. Prior to working at KPU, he was the Chair of International Business Department at Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) for two years. He also worked as Assistant Professor and Head of the EMBA program at BRAC University, Bangladesh. 

Tareq has worked extensively in the pharmaceuticals industry – working for a top international pharmaceutical company having US FDA and UK MHRA certifications. He has worked in the areas of world-class pharmaceuticals project management, new product registration, joint venture, under-licensing and contract manufacturing opportunities in both moderately regulated and regulated markets of Asia, Europe and North America. 

He has published his research in top-tiered academic journals both in Elsevier and Emerald publishing. Additionally, a book solely authored by him on the topic of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the power sector of developing countries is awaiting publication by Springer Nature, Switzerland AG. Additionally, he has written two scholarly books on FDI and Intellectual Property Rights and FDI in the Emerging Economies. 

Tareq has travelled extensively around the world; mostly through new business development opportunities in international markets to countries which are culturally very diverse (i.e., Uzbekistan, Papua New Guinea, North Korea and Ukraine). 

As an International Business Professor – he has a passion for travelling and meeting people from different cultures and enriching himself through the process. He also has an interest in learning languages.

Business Development Manager-International Markets

  • Assessed foreign strategic corporate partnerships in regulatory markets with respect to contract manufacturing and under-licensing opportunities with Tilomed Laboratories in the UK.
  • Completed regular after-market visit analyses of potential buyers; identified opportunities and threats posed by competitors to existing and new markets; presented findings to the International Business unit.
  • Successfully negotiated product selection, registration and pricing with distributors in new markets.
  • Oversaw incoming visits to the plant by foreign Heads of State, Ambassadors, Healthcare NGO’s and other senior Ministry of Health officials, to promote and explore mutual business opportunities.

Executive Planner

 The Turnkey project is a $50M US pharmaceutical manufacturing facility, the only one of its kind in Bangladesh.

  • Actively involved in strategic planning with the project coordination teams to operationalize the facility.
  • Recruited International consultants to expedite inspection from Regulatory Authorities of 5 International Countries (Canada, EU, Australia), and formulate new investment plans for entering these markets.
  • Collaboratively worked alongside BOVIS Lend Lease UK, international engineering firms, local and foreign vendors and international accounting firms, from conception to completion of two-year project.
  • Managed future capacity expansion including additional facilities, product selection and forecasting.
  • Assisted Pharmaceutical Project team in preparing an annual budget, forecasting, initial product and market selection. Also prepared financial reporting and a detailed capacity analysis of the project.
  • Project went to operation in 2002; achieved UK MHRA certification in September 2007 and US FDA approval for the same facility in June 2015.

Administrative Officer / Portfolio Advising

  • Oversaw operations in association with cross-functional leadership teams in sales, corporate finance and HR.
  • As Liaison between the Government and the Financial sector, recruited international investment firms,Chevron Bangladesh and Exxon Mobil, to develop the country’s oil and gas sector.
  • Managed 10 client portfolios; advised on investment returns, accommodated stock purchase requests, and performed trades and underwriting of new stocks (IPOs) to maximize clients’ returns on investments.
