Department of Environmental Science & Management

About ESM

Established in 1994 as the Department of Environmental Studies, the department took the name - Department of Environmental Science and Management (ESM) - in 2004. Today it is popularly known as NSU ESM. Establishment of an environment department by NSU reflects huge opportunity that has opened up for environmental graduates in the national and international job markets. After consolidating the undergraduate study programs over the last 15 years, the department started a graduate study program in 2009, with the funding support of CIDA and academic collaboration with the Natural Resource Institute (NRI) of University of Manitoba, Canada.

Most ESM faculty members have a PhD degree from a renowned university or at least one degree from abroad. Their research interests include pollution control, sustainable resource management, land use, climate change, environmental economics and policy, urban environmental management, environmental health, environmental toxicology, economic valuation, environmental impact assessment, GIS, geology, hydrology, water resource management, waste management, renewable energy, etc.

VISION

Our Vision is to excel in Environmental Education and be recognized nationally and internationally

MISSION

Our Mission is to offer an internationally recognized degree with multidisciplinary expertise for enhancing capability to cope with current and future environmental challenges

DEGREE PROGRAMS

BS in Environmental Science and Environmental Management students are required to successfully complete 130 credits, while MS in Environmental Science and Management students have to complete 36 credits. These credit courses consist of core, major elective as well as elective courses and aim to give students the required knowledge for the field of study chosen and later for their careers.

As part of NSU's dual degree program, ESM students can also earn a major or minor in another discipline (e.g., in economics or business) similar to economics or business students' scope of doing a major or minor in environmental science or environmental management. All ESM students are required to do internship which offers opportunity to work with national and international organizations working in the environmental field.

Due to its multidisciplinary curriculum with wide-ranging courses, ESM graduates are able to avail higher study opportunity abroad in fields of environmental science and engineering; environmental policy and sustainable development; urban planning and environmental management; natural resource management; ecology, toxicology and epidemiology; environmental and natural resource economics; environmental law or disaster management.

NSU Grading Policy is followed by ESM faculty members to grade students

Curriculum Under Revision

Overview

The Department of Environmental Science and Management (ESM) currently offers a BS degree in Environmental Science and Environmental Management. Students from any background, i.e. science, arts or commerce, can be admitted to the programs depending on their line of education at the college level.

The program is designed and aimed to build up students’ knowledge in all significant areas of environment, including students’ introduction to the recent global environmental issues. The state of programme that the department offers have similar program followed in reputed North American universities. Along with its similarity with universities, the program also focuses on local needs.

The program also offers practical training with state of the art laboratories on pollution control, environmental chemistry, microbiology and GIS. It also incorporates field trips to provide students on the ground knowledge on the field of environmental resources and issues in Bangladesh. The Department is equipped with modern Environmental Science Teaching and Research Laboratory, Geographical Information System (GIS) and Environmental Modeling Laboratories established under funding by UGC-World Bank's Higher Education Quality Enhancement Program (HEQEP) to offer in lab training.

An  Environmental  Resource  Center, established  under  CIDA, funded  North South University and University  of  Manitoba  in a joint  project to facilitate graduate students’ opportunity on research and development. The department has collaboration with universities, research organizations and professional bodies at home and abroad. Research and study opportunities with NSU's think tank, the Institute for Development, Environment, and Strategic Studies (IDESS) and opportunity to work with the Earth Club, which has acquired recognitions from Bangladesh Government and international organizations. A good number of ESM students have chance to participate in international seminars, conferences and workshops to enhance their understanding on different fields of environment.

Courses are often accompanied by field trips like the visit to a forest in the ENV 208: Disaster Risk Managemnet course trip below, from 2012

Postgraduate

The  graduate  program  –  MS  in  Environmental  Science  and Management  (MESM)  originally  started  as  MS  in  Resource  and Environmental  Management  (MREM)  –  has  been  established  in collaboration  with  the  University  of  Manitoba,  Canada.  This program focuses on building environmental and natural resource governance and management capacity in Bangladesh.  The  course content was jointly developed by the University of Manitoba and North South University, as  part  of  the  CIDA  funded  project  on  Building  Environmental Governance  Capacity  in  Bangladesh  (BEGCB).

The  program  is  interdisciplinary  –  with  overlapping  social, ecological  and  economic  issues.  It  admits  students  from  different academic  backgrounds,  with  emphasis  on  gender  equity.

Integrated Water Resource Management trip to Nilphamari in March 2016

NSU ESM offers degrees that are not only theoretically enricyhing, but practically oriented as well. To meet that end and to give its students a better out-of-the-classroom experience almost all the courses have a field trip component. Visits are usually conducted to local places of environmental importance like the National Botanical Gardens, Mirpur, Safari Park, Gazipur, Lawachara Forest, Sylhet, Sundarbans Reserved Forest, Cox’s Bazar (the longest sea-shore of the world), Rangamati, Bichnakandi, Kuakata, Tangaor Haor, Chittagong Hill Tracts and surrounding areas, etc.

International trips to countries like Nepal, Bhutan, India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Thailand's forests and rivers are also conducted occassionally to expose students to an international experience like never before.

Internship and Thesis

Our talented and hardworking students partake Internships at and collaborate with world renowned local and international organizations like Centre for Environmental and Geographic Information Systems (CEGIS), GIZ, United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), United Nations Development Program (UNDP), USAID, BRAC, Asian Development Bank (ADB), World Bank, BRIT, Department of Environment (DoE), icddr,b, Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers’ Association (BELA), Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon (BAPA), International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)…and many more.

Students also need to complete a Thesis for satisfying their degree requirement and have the option of working as research assistants in Research Projects on a variety of subject areas ranging from environmental science and engineering, environmental policy and sustainable development, urban planning and environmental management, natural resource management, ecology, toxicology and epidemiology, environmental and natural resource economics, environmental law to disaster management
